The Trend: Eating "Clean"

For those of you that are on Instagram, Pinterest, and even Facebook (I am assuming all of you are on at least one ;) )you have to be familiar with the term "eating clean". I was just talking this "trend" earlier with my sister. I love it because it is everywhere and is positive encouragement that I need! Seeing #cleaneating hashtags everywhere and healthy food pictures are definitely encouraging me to eat better- so I am loving this and hoping it continues!

For those of you that are interested, I found an article from www.eatingwell.com that lists 10 ways to eat clean. Here is a quick version of the list..for the full thing here is the link http://www.eatingwell.com/nutrition_health/nutrition_news_information/10_ways_to_eat_clean?page=11
1. Less Alcohol
2. Less Sugar
3. Less Salt
4. Less Saturated Fat
5. Less Refined Grains (white flour, white rice)
6. Less Processed Foods
7. More Fruit and Veggies
8. More Water
9. More Green Tea
10. More Whole Grains

Personally, I am not really following the exact guidelines of Clean Eating because I have a meat and potato loving man at home that doesn't like veggies much and is veryyyy picky! (maybe some of you can relate?!) I am, however, making small changes to the dinners I cook and snacks I have available in our house.

What steps am I taking?

1. I have started making trips to markets that have better produce and healthier options so it is easy and appealing to snack healthy! -side note something about just walking into Wholefoods makes me want to make healthier choices- is anybody with me on this one?!
2. I am changing my mindset on what I pin. Pinterest is where I go to for tons of meal ideas- If I mostly pin junk food it a) makes me want to eat junk food and b) are the recipes I end up making
3. I am reminding myself of how much better I feel when I eat wholesome food verse junk! I literally have post-it notes on my desk with reminders of why I am starting to seriously think about what I eat before I eat it!

Practical Ideas-

This week at the grocery store I got {this verses that}

  • Tons of Grapes -not candy
  • Strawberries -not candy
  • Teas-instead of pop (plus I am drinking TONS of water)
  • Whole Wheat Pitas-not white bread
  • hummus -instead of unhealthy chip dips
  • pita chips- instead of lays chips
  • guacamole- just because I love it
I hope this list inspires you to switch out a couple unhealthy items on your grocery list for better ones!

What changes are you trying to make for you and your family when it comes to eating habits? I would love to hear from you :)

Married Life: Called to be Different

7 Months. Jake and I have almost been married 7 months and I haven't written many posts about marriage. It's funny because I am always looking for devotionals to read written by ladies that are married because I want insight and stories I can relate to ect. Today after reading one, I thought why I am not writing about my experiences too! I think I might have some insights for newly married ladies or girls about to tie the knot too, so today am writing my first "Married Life" post.

God has made it clear to us, as a couple, that these first 7 months  of our marriage have been meant for just the two of us to grow and work on us as a married couple. Proverbs 31 was really the first place that seemed to continually challenge me, it basically tells exactly what it is to be a Godly wife.

Proverbs 31:10-12

10 An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life. (Proverbs 31:10-12, ESV)

I had read these verses many times before but they seemed new to me again. I knew that this was the type of woman that I was supposed to be. I am not called to argue with my husband, tear him down, or complain. Of course, this is a huge challenge for me and I fail all of the time! Not necessarily because he is always messing up, but because I find myself constantly needing to put a word in! I can choose to constantly pick him apart or be rude or just focus on what I can be doing better! When I fail I am reminded that is only by God's strength that I am able to be the wife I am called to be. I find myself praying multiple times a day that God helps me to be the wife that I need to be for Jake. (and of course I pray that he will be the Godly husband that I need him to be) This is hard! We all make mistakes everyday and find our emotions getting the best of us! If you can relate to this post, I encourage you to start praying that God will help you to become like the woman described in Proverbs 31. I am sure it will be a life-long challenge to become this type of woman that's why there is no better day to start trying than today!
